Autism Awareness Month: 8 More Years Until Graduation

We have 8 years before it happens to him. If time has taught me anything, it’s that she waits for no one, sneaking up behind you while you plan and ponder and erroneously assume she will be generous and accommodating. 22 is the magic number. The ledge is always there. In the beginning it looks…

Andrew was 2 years old when he was diagnosed with autism, epilepsy, global developmental delay, and so many other challenges. It took another 14 years before we discovered he has a rare genetic disorder called Syngap1. Andrew is an amazing young man and is such a source of joy and love. Our greatest wish is to give him the very best quality of life and help others with this rare disease. Despite everything he’s faced, Andrew continues to fill our home with laughter, hope, and unconditional love. He is our hero. 💙💜💚
Happy Birthday to my best friend and amazing husba Happy Birthday to my best friend and amazing husband @a__s__h__ ! You bring so much joy and love and laughter into our lives, and you wear many hats (not just the ones in these pics) including dad, husband, brother, uncle, son, and friend. You are kind to those you love, as well as total strangers, knowing that a little kindness can go a long way. You care so deeply and love so unconditionally, and we are all so lucky to have you in our lives. Thank you for being exactly who you are, because you’re exactly who we need and love.

I can’t believe it’s been 20 years since you c I can’t believe it’s been 20 years since you came into the world and gave new meaning and purpose to our lives. And yet, though it seems like yesterday that I first stared into your beautiful face and felt my heart and soul forever imprint onto yours, I cannot imagine a time when you weren’t here, the days before you existed melting into blurry memories.

And then it was YOU and everything suddenly came into focus.

Today was so awesome. A baseball game first thing this morning with your brother as your buddy, your favorite dinosaur bounce house at your favorite park, and your favorite people helping us celebrate you and the joy you bring to all of our lives.

Happy 20th Birthday Andrew.

You are magnificent.
And after all of this time,
we’re still amazed
you are ours.

Andrew, are you ready to play baseball today?” Andrew, are you ready to play baseball today?”

He’s never let us dress him faster.

And here he stood, nearly an hour before we needed to leave.

Not much will change for us as the world moves on from Covid restrictions. Andrew is high risk, gets pneumonia from even the common cold, so we will continue to take precautions and do what we can to keep him safe.

But an outdoor game of baseball, his very first in two years, feels like a good compromise. We are weary of the virus and we are tired of the isolation and so we try to find a way around both as best we can.

Last night we laid out his uniform like it was his very first day of school.

Let’s just say Andrew wasn’t the only one excited this morning.
