Congressional Hearing on Autism: My Son is Not a Burden

Yesterday was an emotional day for the autism community in our country. Actually, I should say communities; we are not a united bunch by any means, with a myriad of issues dividing us. But that’s for another post. Yesterday there was a congressional hearing on autism – the first one in a decade – and…

Today is World Autism Awareness Day and while Andrew’s story is complicated and filled with many challenges, loving him is so very easy. He is an amazing young man who enriches our lives, fills our home with his beautiful sounds and joyful flapping, and makes our grateful hearts swell with pride at everything he’s accomplished and overcome over the years.

Andrew, we love you so much. Your story is one of courage, hard work, perseverance, unconditional love, and so much promise.

And it’s just getting started.

The day after my hip replacement surgery, my sweet The day after my hip replacement surgery, my sweet sister brought over a bunch of gifts, one of which was a pair of shoes with laces. I saw them and laughed, telling her she was getting ahead of herself. After all, it had been over 5 years since I had been able to tie my shoes and had to resort to slip on sneakers. Shoes with laces seemed impossible!

Today, 3 weeks out from my surgery, I decided to open that new pair of shoes and try them on.

And I made those laces my bitch.

My sweet, beautiful Andrew. I’ve loved you more My sweet, beautiful Andrew. I’ve loved you more than life itself from the moment I first met you 19 years ago today. You became the heartbeat of our home, guiding us towards the most extraordinary life, the deepest most powerful love. Though each day I believe I love you as much as I possibly can, remarkably, inexplicably, that loves continues to grow with each new sunrise.

It isn’t enough to thank you for all you have given us, taught us, forgiven us for. We will forever be indebted to you for entrusting us with raising you, loving you, protecting you. You have elevated our lives to heights we never could have imagined, and our greatest joy is watching you continue to unfold into the amazing human being you are.

Happy 19th Birthday Andrew.
We love you so very much.

You are magnificent.
