When "OMG,That Sucks" Doesn’t Even Begin to Cover It

I’ve been keeping things pretty light-hearted around here lately.  Sure, once in a while I make you suffer through a bout of poetry that probably only makes sense to me, or I touch upon our struggles of raising a special needs child, or I vent about random crap that needs to be vented about so that…

Our Sprint4Syngap event was a success and so much Our Sprint4Syngap event was a success and so much fun thanks to our family and friends.

We also finally got to meet a fellow Syngap family in person for the first time, after nearly 4 years of friendship on Facebook!

Thank you so much to everyone who has donated to our fundraiser, we are so grateful for your support! 💙💜💚
Happy Birthday to my best friend and amazing husba Happy Birthday to my best friend and amazing husband @a__s__h__ ! You bring so much joy and love and laughter into our lives, and you wear many hats (not just the ones in these pics) including dad, husband, brother, uncle, son, and friend. You are kind to those you love, as well as total strangers, knowing that a little kindness can go a long way. You care so deeply and love so unconditionally, and we are all so lucky to have you in our lives. Thank you for being exactly who you are, because you’re exactly who we need and love.
I can’t believe it’s been 20 years since you c I can’t believe it’s been 20 years since you came into the world and gave new meaning and purpose to our lives. And yet, though it seems like yesterday that I first stared into your beautiful face and felt my heart and soul forever imprint onto yours, I cannot imagine a time when you weren’t here, the days before you existed melting into blurry memories.

And then it was YOU and everything suddenly came into focus.

Today was so awesome. A baseball game first thing this morning with your brother as your buddy, your favorite dinosaur bounce house at your favorite park, and your favorite people helping us celebrate you and the joy you bring to all of our lives.

Happy 20th Birthday Andrew.

You are magnificent.
And after all of this time,
we’re still amazed
you are ours.
Happy Birthday to my very first best friend, my be Happy Birthday to my very first best friend, my beautiful baby sister @aggielaughsoutloud!

You are such an incredible mom, wife, sister, aunt, daughter and friend. I’m so proud of you and so lucky to have you in my life (and living 4 houses down from me)!

You are so loved and treasured and we are so excited to celebrate you!

Sto Lat Aggie!

Andrew, are you ready to play baseball today?” Andrew, are you ready to play baseball today?”

He’s never let us dress him faster.

And here he stood, nearly an hour before we needed to leave.

Not much will change for us as the world moves on from Covid restrictions. Andrew is high risk, gets pneumonia from even the common cold, so we will continue to take precautions and do what we can to keep him safe.

But an outdoor game of baseball, his very first in two years, feels like a good compromise. We are weary of the virus and we are tired of the isolation and so we try to find a way around both as best we can.

Last night we laid out his uniform like it was his very first day of school.

Let’s just say Andrew wasn’t the only one excited this morning.
A rare genetic disorder like Syngap can turn small A rare genetic disorder like Syngap can turn small things into big things.

Recently Andrew’s front tooth sustained some kind of trauma and has turned light grey. Due to Andrew’s health risks and behavioral challenges, all dental work is done in the hospital.

We had our appointment with Andrew’s longtime dentist today. The good news is the discolored tooth is not damaged so it will heal over time. The bad news is the tooth next to it was also hurt and does show an issue at the root. The worse news is Andrew’s dentist doesn’t do adult root canals and can’t think of anyone she knows in adult dentistry that does them in the hospital. Like I said, things get complicated with our special kiddos.

The Good News:
It’s not an emergency and we have time to watch it. That gives Andrew’s dentist time to reach out to colleagues and help us secure an endodontist who will do the work in the hospital.

By the way, NEWSFLASH: Our small adorable children grow up to become adults and still need lifelong care in specialized settings so like let’s get with the program people.

The Better News:
Andrew’s amazing dentist does curbside visits. Here’s the thing about curbside. It’s in season and super convenient during this pandemic but families like ours have been advocating for curbside access forever. It’s a game changer to be able to see doctors and access services from the comfort and safety of our cars. I hope to God that long after this pandemic becomes an endemic our society continues to offer accommodations like curbside access to the most vulnerable populations, as well as parents with little ones. It makes a world of difference.

The Bestest News:
Not only did Andrew get a check-up from the van, HE LET THEM CLEAN HIS TEETH. This was his first tooth cleaning while awake. I also held the tray for the dentist and her assistant and kept asking “Can you ask me to hand you something STAT please?” But I don’t think they could hear me because of all of masks and shields and stuff.

In conclusion:
Andrew was a rock star today.
We need more professionals accommodating our special needs population, especially as they age out of pediatric care.

And I’m basically a dentist now.
